From Vision to Creation: Exploring the Power of Moodboards

    I don’t know about you, but the culture of consumerism has felt a wee overwhelming for me lately. It seems like with each passing year, I receive more and more promotional Black Friday emails (even from people and organisations I wouldn’t normally expect them from), and Christmas seems to start on November 1st. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to navigate all this sensory and informational overload while trying to maintain a calm mind, and the dominance of short video formats certainly isn’t helping. So, instead of diving straight into all things Christmassy (don’t worry, I will get to that—I do love Christmas after all), today’s blog post is both educational and inspirational. It’s about one of the early stages of the designer's creative process: the making of physical moodboards.

    Sampling materials at the outset of the design process is an indispensable practice for any designer commited to delivering outstanding results.  This tangible exploration allows us to assess the texture, colour and visual impact of various materials, ensuring a harmonious integration of elements. Beyond aesthetics, sampling serves as a practical tool for evaluating the durability, wear resistance and maintenance requirements of materials, aligning them with the functional demands of the space.  Additionally, the process enables us to consider the impact of natural and artificial lighting on different materials, allowing for informed decisions that enhance the overall ambiance. 

    For anyone in the process of remodelling or designing a home—or any kind of space for that matter—who doesn’t wish (or cannot afford) to hire a professional, my advice is to think about these aspects from the very beginning. Sampling materials can help you avoid costly mistakes. Having the actual materials in front of you will make a tremendous difference. It will also help you decide on a colour scheme or resolve any dilemmas you might have.

    The photos are an example of a recent physical moodboard I created for a retreat. Here’s the story behind it: Tucked away in the Irish countryside near the rugged coastline, this retreat draws its essence from the island’s landscapes. Its design weaves together the textures of moss, fern, ivy, and mushrooms from forests; the raw stones of cliffs; the shifting hues of lakes; and the coastal treasures of seaweed, seashells, and sand. Inspired by Celtic lore and ancient pagan rituals, this haven awakens all five senses—through the soothing sounds of nature, earthy scents, tactile materials, seasonal flavours, and evocative visuals. It offers a tranquil connection to Ireland's timeless beauty and spiritual heritage.
